Apple Music honors late rapper AKA.
AKA, also known as Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, was a well-known South African rapper and producer who tragically killed away on February 10, 2023. This week, Dadaboy Ehiz conducts a special homage to him.
Some of AKA’s most frequent collaborators, including Musa Keys, K.O., and Nasty C, reflect on his influence on hip-hop in South Africa and across the continent as a way to honor his life and legacy.
Nasty C, who most recently appeared with him on the song “Lemonade,” comments on the late rapper on Apple Music: Apple Music honors late rapper AKA.
AKA had a distinctive impact on South African hip-hop. He is one of the men who contributed to the acceptance of English rap music. He cleared the way in South Africa for people like me who are interested in hip-hop. And he was just sweet and always gave me advice on how to get better; he was like a big brother to me. He’ll always be present in my thoughts.
K.O, AKA’s longterm companion, lauded him for possessing the drive and enthusiasm that led him away from the Hip Hop industry.
“AKA is one of the performers that really elevated showmanship. You can tell that he wrote his music with large stages in mind when you listen to his discography and take it into account. He was the first individual to truly commit to being a “pop” act. Although he was an MC, you can see that he also wanted to be a “pop” artist from the music’s texture, tone, and intensity. I believe he was successful in doing so.
On his birthday, in front of a restaurant in Florida, Durban, AKA, better known as Supamega, was shot and killed along with his friend and manager Tibz. Fans and colleagues throughout the continent were shocked by his passing.
On February 18, 2023, he was laid to rest at Sandston, South Africa, during a private memorial service.
On Friday, February 24, 2023, AKA’s new album, titled “Mass Country,” which was due out before he passed away, will be released posthumously.
