R Kelly sentenced to additional 20years in prison for child pornography on 24th February 2023.
R Kelly sentenced to additional 20years in prison who is known to be a famous American musician. The R&B musician was given a 20-year prison sentence on Thursday by a US judge for child pornography and other offenses, but he will serve the majority of it concurrently with a previous sentence.
In a prior federal trial, Kelly was found guilty by a Brooklyn jury and is currently serving a 30-year term for racketeering and sex trafficking.
The new sentence will be executed simultaneously with the previous one, with the exception of one year, under the Chicago judge’s ruling. Both of Kelly’s convictions for federal crimes are being appealed by his attorney, Jennifer Bonjean.
The Previous Conviction
Six of the 13 counts brought against R Kelly in the Chicago trial three of making child pornography and three of enticing a minor led to his conviction in September 2022.
Seven further counts against the singer were dismissed by a federal jury, including the charge that he obstructed justice during a prior trial. In the 2008 child pornography case, a jury found the singer not guilty after Kelly and two former business partners were accused of tampering with the trial.
Kelly was convicted on federal charges in Chicago, one year after he was found guilty in New York of regularly recruiting girls and women for sex. That verdict was viewed as a turning point for the #MeToo movement as it was the first large sex assault trial where the majority of the accusers were black women.
In addition, Kelly’s long-rumored abuse of women and children was finally officially charged.
R Kelly was nominated for a Grammy for his song “You Are Not Alone,” which Michael Jackson covered and for which he won three for the song “I Believe I Can Fly.” While he referred to himself as the “Pied Piper of R&B,” critics named him “the King of R&B”.
